Sheriff's office receives DUI enforcement grant

CHARLESTON COUNTY (WCSC) - The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office was recently awarded a $229,833 grant issued by the South Carolina Department of Safety’s Office of Highway Safety which will be used to create a DUI Enforcement Team within the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

The grant will fund two full-time deputies, two vehicles and associated equipment. The primary function of the DUI Enforcement Team will be to prevent and reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities by conducting proactive DUI measures. These measures include enforcement, education and participating in Sober or Slammer campaign activities throughout the year.

The grant will be a three-year allocation that will put extra deputies on the street with the expressed objective of targeting roadway DUI drivers.

Preview ride and party for Battery to Beach Route

Charleston Moves, a local bicycling advocacy group, is working to create a bicycle route from Folly Beach to the Isle of Palms via the Battery.  The B2B, or Battery2Beach, not only can be used by residents for commuting and exercise, but the route can be exploited for tourism purposes.

There are obstacles to get over to make the entire route a finished, bicycle friendly reality, but Charleston Moves is giving interested cyclists a preview of the route on Saturday, October 30.  Two groups will cycle from each end of the route to meet at Whitepoint Garden at The Battery.  A party will follow at the Vendue Rooftop Bar.

Additional 526 public meetings scheduled

Additional meetings to gather public comments on the plan to extend the Mark Clark Expressway through West Ashley and across James and Johns Islands have been scheduled.  Concern was expressed at the first meeting that having only two meetings at a central location would prevent some people from attending and giving their thoughts.

Each public hearing will follow the same format with an open-house question and answer opportunity starting at 5 pm, and a formal presentation with comment period starting at 6 pm.   Meetings will be held:
