Folly Beach Public Safety awards Life Saving citation

 

FOLLY BEACH (WCSC) - Folly Beach Public Safety has honored one of its own after a sergeant risked his life to save another.

Sergeant Andrew Gilreath was awarded the Life Saving citation at a City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 23. Gilreath ran into the Atlantic Ocean to save a woman who was drowning near the Folly Beach Fishing Pier in June 2012.

A 10-year veteran of law enforcement, Gilreath has been with Folly Beach Public Safety since March 2012.

"Sergeant Gilreath has been a great addition to our agency," said Director of Public Safety, Dennis Brown. "He put his life at risk to save another and for that he is very deserving of this recognition."

This is the first time in 2012 that a Folly Beach Public Safety officer has received the Life Saving citation.

Two other officers were also recognized Tuesday night with certificates for their performance.

FOLLY BEACH (WCSC) - Two Folly Beach Public Safety Officers will be honored for their service Thursday evening.

The Folly Beach Exchange Club will honor police officer David Stanton and firefighter Rob Fulmer as Police Officer of the Year and Firefighter of the Year, respectively. The award ceremony will be held Thursday, October 18 at 7 p.m. at the Exchange Club on Folly Beach.

“We couldn’t be more honored to have these two public safety officers recognized,” said Dennis Brown, Director of Public Safety. “Their colleagues, coworkers and the citizens they serve are all very proud.”

Stanton has been a police officer for 21-years, 12 of which he has been at Folly Beach.

Fulmer has spent the last four years as a firefighter on Folly Beach, and has over nine-years of experience total.

Charleston ranks 3rd for happiest city for Winter travel

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - It's a good time of year to be in Charleston. The Holy City ranks third for happiest city for Winter travel.

Hilton Honors partnered with Sperlings Bestplaces to find the top 10 happiest travel destinations in the United States.

Charleston was outranked by Tucson, Ariz. and St. Petersburg, Fla.

Several cities from California made the list as well as Washington D.C. and Las Vegas.

Why Charleston? Well, it's warm and a beautiful southern city full of hundreds of years of history, according to the survey.

NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - After a four-year wait, Elton John is returning to the North Charleston Coliseum.

The legendary performer will take the stage on Wednesday, March 7, at 8 p.m.  Tickets go on sale next Saturday, January 28 at 10 a.m.

Tickets starting at $37 and will be available online at Ticketmaster.com.
