Charleston fights early influx of mosquitoes | News

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston County officials say a mild winter and a wet spring with high tides have them already working around the clock to fight mosquitoes.

Mosquito Control Superintendent Donna Odom said the county got 400 calls for help fighting mosquitoes this March. The county received 23 calls in March 2011.

Odom says the country sprayed almost 110,000 acres of land to kill mosquitoes, and crews are working as hard as they usually do in the middle of summer.

Odom says if the wet weather hangs around, it won't get better anytime soon. She says residents need to check their yards for any standing water that mosquitoes can use to breed.
