Folly Beach to hold benefit for longtime resident who lost home to fire

Fire crews respond to the fire at Howell's home.

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC)- Folks on Folly Beach are rallying behind a longtime resident who recently lost his home to a fire caused by a lightning strike.

Ed Howell, 80, has lived on Folly Beach since 1957. A former chairman of the city's planning commission, Howell is well known for installing the island's first two-way police radio system. But on April 29, a lightning strike caused a fire and heavy damage to his West Hudson Avenue home. Howell and his dog escaped, and have since found a contractor who thinks the home can be restored.

However, city officials say Howell, known over the years for making a number of anonymous donations to those in need, including secret mortgage payments for people in danger of losing their homes, has fallen on hard times.

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC)- Crews are continuing to pump sand on to Folly Beach in an attempt to stabilize Folly Beach County Park.

Approximately 175,000 cubic yards of sand has been moved into the county park since the Bring Back The Beach Project began two Sundays ago. The project is a large-scale effort by Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) to renourish the county park, which closed in 2011 due to heavy erosion caused by winds and surf from Hurricane Irene.

According to a release from the CCPRC, contractors will begin driving steel sheet piles into the beach on May 15 as part of a terminal groin.

The goal of the stabilization project is to allow the park to reopen for public beach access only, and allow space for 200 vehicles. The area of beach will also be protected against erosion and storm events.

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC)- The National Civic League has named Folly Beach a finalist for the All-America City Award.

Coined "The Edge of America", Folly Beach joins 19 other finalists selected by the National Civic League for a shot at the award. This year's competition focuses on locations that produce community-wide initiatives to honor and benefit veterans and military families.

According to the League's website, "All-America City Awards recognize local action through community-based problem-solving and civic engagement efforts involving the public, private, and nonprofit sectors."

"AAC is more than an awards program," noted NCL Interim Chair Liz Hollander. "It gives communities a unique opportunity to celebrate their successes, but also to take a clear-eyed look at their civic capacities."

Work begins on Folly Beach Co. Park this week

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC)- Construction is expected to begin this weekend on Folly Beach County Park, which has been closed since Hurricane Irene moved through two years ago.

The entire park is fenced off and crews will soon start pulling in barges and piping to start pumping sand to restore the eroded land.

There are two separate phases to the construction plan. The first phase is to re-nourish the beach using sand from the Folly River. Phase two consists of building a groin to extend 745 feet out to the ocean to preserve the beach from further erosion, the main issue which caused the park to be shut down two years ago.

The project is expected to cost $3 million. When completed the parking lot will be able to hold 200 cars.

Irene's waters wiped out the dunes, washed out the parking lots, and made some facilities inaccessible.
