CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A new online data resource is combining metro information from four Charleston organizations and placing it all on a free website.

Charleston Regional Competitiveness Center's new website is a collaborative effort between the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Charleston Regional Development Alliance, and the Trident Workforce Investment Board.

This website will provide users with information on the Charleston metro area, such as economic, demographic and workforce information along with research and data trends used to make business and policy decisions.

Charleston Restaurant Week will kick off September 5 and run through September 16. The event, held by the Charleston Restaurant Association, will give people a chance to experience the world-renowned cuisine of the Lowcountry at an affordable price.

Participating restaurants will feature special meal deals, offering three items for $20, $30, or $40 depending on the restaurant.

Charleston Restaurant Week begins tomorrow

CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Charleston's week-and-a-half long celebration of culinary brilliance is back.

Charleston Restaurant Week will kick off Wednesday, September 5 and run through September 16. The event, held by the Charleston Restaurant Association, will give people a chance to experience the world-renowned cuisine of the Lowcountry at an affordable price.

Over 130 participating restaurants will feature special meal deals, offering three-course meals for $20, $30, or $40 depending on the restaurant. Most of the restaurant week menus offer a limited selection of different appetizer, main course and desert choices for foodies to mix and match.

Free workshop for small business owners on March 23

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - Charleston County Government’s Small Business Enterprise Program will hold a free workshop later this month to introduce owners of small businesses to department heads and procurement officials from Charleston County Government and the Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission.

The workshop will be held on Friday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at James Island County Park’s Edisto Hall. Entrance to the park is also free for attendees.

LOWCOUNTRY (WCSC) - Wayne Brothers Construction Company is hiring dozens of experienced workers for some projects in the area expected to start as early as next Tuesday.

The company is looking for 80 workers who must already have their own personal hand tools and live within 60 miles of the Charleston area.  These jobs are for experienced form carpenters, form carpenter helpers, and laborers.

City to award excellent design in Charleston

The City of Charleston will hold their first annual presentation of “The City of Charleston Award for Design Excellence” in late October.  

These awards will be presented by the City’s Department of Planning, Preservation and Sustainability (PP&S) at an inaugural ceremony on October 19, 2011 during National Design Week.

Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. has authorized PP&S to: 1) encourage the highest quality of design and construction in Charleston, and 2) administer the City’s zoning, preservation and design regulations and processes.   Mayor Riley said, “These awards are one way for us to recognize architecture and design that most exemplifies our aspirations for the future of the city.  They also recognize the most successful outcomes of City staff’s collaboration with private design and development teams.”

The awards are for new construction.  New construction may constitute completely new buildings and spaces or substantial additions to existing places.

Study shows Wine+Food Festival continues to grow

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Based on the results of the 2011 Economic Impact Study conducted by the College of Charleston’s Office of Tourism Analysis, the 2011 BB&T Charleston Wine + Food Festival has increased its economic impact to the Charleston area by 2.1 million.

The Festival’s total contribution to the Charleston-area economy rose from 5.09 million in 2010 to 7.3 million in 2011.  Overall, this year’s Festival saw an increase in attendance, a higher percentage of non-local ticketholders visiting Charleston primarily for the event and a growing positive influence on the community.
